[Interview①] ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ Son Dongmyeong “Shin Chan and Kazama, I’m thankful for those nicknames”
Son Dongmyeong is Mnet ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ ‘s gymnastic fairy. When you’re tired or when you need to stretch for your blood circulation, spread both of your hands apart and go back and forth. It’s called ‘Dongmyeong’s gymnastics’ and he was the trainee who created it.
“I didn’t know it would appear on the show. I couldn’t sleep well and because we practiced until dawn I needed to stay awake. The training started and it was the first day of practice but I was really sleepy. It was a situation where we had to focus to finish quickly but I also felt sleepy.”
In fact, when Dongmyeong’s gymnastics happened we discovered Son Dongmyeong’s charm but there was also ‘evil editing’. (The trainees) had to resolve quickly the mission they were given and because he did the gymnastics without thinking, he received bad response at the time. Son Dongmyeong laughed, “I don’t usually have much sense”. Lee Gunhee, a RBW family member who live with him, added, “I’ve always seen Dongmyeong as a friend that make the mood light. At that time, he was trying to brighten the atmosphere that had become a bit depressed but I think that there was this kind of response because (viewers) saw an emphasis on him only.”
However, the negative public opinion totally changed when he used the ‘Shin Chan and Kazama’ image. While (viewers) paid attention to his relationship with the trainee Seo Sunghyuk, Son Dongmyeong received the cute nickname of Shin Chan. Son Dongmyeong said, “I’m really grateful to the person who named me Shin Chan and Kazama. This person is among the person I’m thankful to in my life. I really want to meet and greet them,” adding, “I want to thank once again everyone who is viewing me favorably,” thanking the National Producers.
-What did you think of your image on the show? “If I close my eyes there I remember the scene. I think we were tired because it was late but I regretted it watching the broadcast, ‘Why did I do that’. Watching the show, moving memories came up and I felt touched.”
-Is there a memorable video? “I want to erase the Hidden Box video. I’m easily scared but in this video especially, I was really startled. The trainee who went before me yelled ‘Eel!’ really loudly, and he sounded really frightened. Someone shouted and my mind went blank.”
-Who were the trainees you knew before appearing in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’? “(Park) Jihoon (Kim) Yehyun and I are going to the same school, we’ve known each other for 3 years. I didn’t know we would meet in the recording.”
-How was the camp life? "Even if 3~4 months are a brief time we became very close. When we were just on stage together our relationship was awkward but during the program we became really close and were more comfortable with each other. I sometimes think about it when I’m in the practice room.”
-There were also some tears shed “Actually, if we're talking about boys, we hide our tears most of the time. It’s a man’s pride (laugh). When we had to encourage ourselves(?) it was time to record a message video to someone but I think it’s when most of us cried. There was also one friend who said, ‘No but I didn’t cry?’ even when his eyes had become red.” -What did you write in your practice diary? “At first, I just vented my anger. I almost had conversation with my practice diary. ‘I had an interview today, I cried~’ like this. The level of a 2nd grader (middle school). It’s not really that things were sad but everything was unfamiliar and difficult. Because I’m not someone who learnt dance I felt left behind.”
-Among the 101 persons, I’m the best at…
“Gymnastic? Dongmyeong’s gymnastic is good for blood circulation and for waking you up.”
-Did you get something out of “Produce 101 Season 2”? “I think the citizens can achieve the goals I wanted to show you honestly(?). Also, when I was in the show, it’s not a bad thing but all of the trainees were good looking. Even if I couldn’t show you my skills, from now on I will show them through the activities of the band MAS.”
-Your position in MAS “I’m taking care of the vocals and piano. I’m practicing hard. I think my dreams grew bigger when I was doing ‘Produce 101 Season 2’.”

“It was a short and intense work experience. Even if I don’t have any regrets it tasted a bit bitter. I realized that it’s the job I want to do today(?).”
-Something you want to say to the National Producers “Even if it would be great that you continue to support me like this I’m realist, I hope you can still have interest (in me) sometimes from away ‘Is he doing okay?’ like this.”

- Whoa… He wasn’t someone who learn who to dance? When I watched the show I only knew that he was funny with the Dongmyeong’s gymnastic and Shin-Chan. When he went on stage with his injury he looked good with make-up, his expression and hand movements while sitting were really good and I was surprised to realize that he’s talented.
