[Interview③] ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ Son Dongmyeong "I’m looking for the netizen who named me Shin Chan and Kazama"
‘Shin Chan’s leader’, ‘Dongmyeong’s gymnastics’ etc. RBW trainee Son Dongmyeong is a trainee who got known with his wacky and bright personality through Mnet ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. In fact, his bright image was charming.
“It’s sad that ’Produce 101 Season 2’ has ended, I miss the hyungs and my friends. Even if it was short, for me it was 4 long months of a lot of the work I dream of, so I was happy,” said Son Dongmyeong, “Sometimes on the street some people recognize me. I was shocked,” telling his last impression with a smile.
Son Dongmyeon said, “Every time I showed a bright image on the show the fans liked it,” adding, “During the filming, there weren’t only things that made us laugh, there were also sad moments, and hard moments but because (the viewers) liked the laughing and bright image (I had), I gained strength every time I was feeling down.”
Son Dongmyeong received the most attention in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ during the practice of the 1st group covering ‘Shock’ from Beast for the group battle evaluation. At this time, ‘Shock’ 1st team wasn’t progressing (well) and was in a stressful situation. Song Dongmyeong innocently asked, “So, should we go drink some water to clear our minds?”, and Seo Sunghyuk was seen disagreeing with him when he answered, “Let’s just decide quickly.” At the end, Seo Sunghyuk (was seen) standing still, spacing out with an anxious expression, and behind him Son Dongmyeong, Choi Seunghyuk, Jeong Hyujun were innocently doing gymnastics for blood circulation, making (us) smile.
After that this scene was aired, the name ‘Three points for Shin-Chan, one point for Kazama’ started to become a topic of conversation in the Internet community. Later, Kazama - Seo Sunghyuk got recognized for his skills and authenticity and went up from his rank of 95 to rank 31. Son Dongmyeong said “Sunghyukie called to thanks me. But it’s me that is thankful to Sunghyuk, thanks to him and because of the hyung’s image I received a positive image.”
Furthermore, the choreography of the song ‘Showtime’ catched one’s eye among the concept evaluation songs from being derived from ‘Dongmyeong’s gymnastic’. Son Dongmyeong said “It was dawn and we had to practice, everyone was so tired but I thought about a decisive way to fight off sleep. If we’re half asleep and do some blood circulation exercises than we could wake up” adding with a smile, “In fact, I didn’t know that this scene would be aired. Because the production crew edited it in a funny way it gave birth to Shin-Chan and Kazama, I’m grateful. I want to find the netzien who gave (us) the nicknames of Shin-Chan and Kazama to thank them.”
The ‘Shock’ stage he worked hard on, even doing the Dongmeong’s gymnastic, left him with regrets as he injured his leg two days before the performance. Son Dongmyeong said “I had never learned how to dance, I started learning through ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. It was a stage where I could have shown my dance for the first time but I got hurt two days before it,” adding while being moved, “I’m the one to blame but because the hyungs who were around me and the production crew helped me so much I received a good treatment, and I could also stand on stage. Originally, I was supposed not to but I was grateful to stand on my first and last stage. I remember it as when I sang in front of the largest audience in my life.”
Son Dongmyeong’s bright energy grew even bigger with ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. Son Dongmyeong said “When I was in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ my attitude of mind changed, I think I became eager,” adding, “Before the broadcast, I tried to hide the me who is lacking and the things I couldn’t do. Rather than correcting my shortcomings I hided them and tried to show what I’m good at,” adding, “I knew what I couldn’t do in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ and I was given time to fix it. The mind and personality of the person called Son Dongmyeong changed. It changed more positively.”
Now Son Dongmyeong is about to re-debut as a member of the band MAS in the second half of the year. Son Dongmeong said “Everyone in the company, MAS hyungs included, are really putting all their energy in practicing,” adding with a bright smile, “I hope you would continue to support me like you’re doing now and please look forward (MAS’ activities). It’s a title but our goal as a band is that we would like to establish South Korea’s new band culture.”
Son Dongmyeong’s dream was to be ‘A singer you’re not ashamed of’. He told us his resolution “I want to become a singer (who is able to tell) its stories, my own story. Later when I become a really great singer someday, I just want to become a singer you’re not ashamed of.”
